Onam is an harvest festival celebrated in the southern Indian state of Kerala. The date is based on the Panchangam which falls on the 22nd nakshatra Thiruvonam in the month Chingam of Malayalam calendar, which in Gregorian calendar falls between August–September. According to legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate the King Mahabali whose spirit is said to visit Kerala every year during Onam and the Vamana avatar of Vishnu.
